Bathurst receives lodgment confirmation
Bathurst Resources Limited has received confirmation from the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) that its application for the Buller Plateaux Continuation Project (the Project) has been received under the Fast-track Approvals Act 2024.
The Project proposes to continue mining operations across the Stockton and Denniston Plateaux (collectively known as the Buller Plateaux) for up to 25 years, enabling the extraction of approximately 20 million tonnes of premium metallurgical (coking) coal for export over the life of mine.
“We are proud to support the region's future through responsible mining, regional employment and ongoing environmental stewardship.” Richard Tacon, Bathurst CEO
More on lodgement
“Bathurst welcomes the fast-track process: this is a single, comprehensive pathway that enables full assessment of the Project’s benefits and impacts, while maintaining rigorous scrutiny and
independent oversight,” company CEO Richard Tacon said today.
"The Project is expected to secure approximately 390 existing jobs on the West Coast and a further 50 elsewhere in New Zealand, while delivering an estimated $529 million to $827 million in economic benefits over its life," Tacon said.
"It will also support the long-term viability of the Midland Line rail network, a critical transport link
for West Coast businesses. In addition, Bathurst will continue managing legacy acid mine drainage and land rehabilitation activities undertaken on behalf of the Crown."
“Stockton produces premium metallurgical coal that is highly sought after by steelmakers. Its low ash content and strong coking properties support efficient steel production and continue to be valued in international markets.
“Until low-emissions steelmaking technologies are commercially viable at scale, high-quality coking coal remains necessary for traditional steel production. Steel is also essential for infrastructure required to support renewable energy generation, including wind turbines, solar farms and electricity transmission networks,” Tacon said.
The application follows 21 months’ preparation, and extensive engagement with stakeholders, iwi
and regulatory agencies. The Project includes significant environmental management measures and a comprehensive residual effects package, including long-term pest and predator control and species management programs.
The EPA will now undertake statutory reviews and assess the application against the requirements of the Fast-track Approvals Act 2024 before determining whether it is complete for referral to an Expert Panel.
“Mining has been part of the West Coast's identity and economy for generations,” Tacon said. “We are proud to support the region's future through responsible mining, regional employment and ongoing environmental stewardship.”
